Government appeals Khadr court ruling - The government is appealing a Federal Court judge's ruling that Canada must press the United States for the return of Omar Khadr from the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, officials confirmed Friday. [CBC Canada]
So Prime Minister Harper loves to "Support Our Troops", but the "Rule of Law" that our troops are supposedly fighting for (and, as he'd love to point out, dieing there) isn't respected here in Canada by our Prime Minister.
In the Federal Court decision issued last month, the judge pointed out that Khadr is the last citizen of any Western country held at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre. Other countries have repatriated their citizens.
The U.S. and Canadian governments are signatories to a United Nations protocol that states fighters under age 18 are to be considered child soldiers and must be released and helped to reintegrate into society.
Besides, the USA would likely love to have us request Omar Kadr back, just to get him off their hands - Kadr's case has become an international embarrassment.
Now Canada can share that embarrassment with Harper's best-friends-forever, the USA.
It just makes my Head Explode!
